Homer's city of Achilles is now a village of 400 people with one of the best hiking gorges in Greece outside its back door.

One of the seven cities Agamemnon offered to Achilles — today a tiny, exquisite village nestled between the blue waters of the Messinian Gulf and the towering Taÿgetos Mountains. The nearby Vyros Gorge, emerging just north of town, runs to the foot of Mt Profitis Ilias at 2407m, and is hugely popular with hikers. The village has a network of walking trails through the surrounding mountains that pass through the mountain village of Exohorio on the gorge edge.
