The Romans exiled enemies here — the island was considered so remote it was a natural prison. Today it's one of the Cyclades' finest villages.
The concealed cliff-top capital of Folegandros, described as one of the most appealing villages in the Cyclades — a place so inaccessible it was used as a political exile island from Roman times to the 20th century. The medieval kastro, built by Marco Sanudo in the 13th century, is a tangle of narrow streets spanned by low archways, with wooden balconies blazing with bougainvillea. A steep path leads up to the church of the Virgin, perched dramatically on the cliff edge above the town.
