The medieval Catholic hill-town above the port of Ermoupolis on Syros — a fascinating place to wander, with steep alleyways climbing between Cycladic whitewashed houses and the 13th-century Agios Georgios cathedral with its star-fretted barrel roof and baroque capitals. From the summit are views of neighbouring islands, and the little Vamvakaris Museum celebrates the life of Markos Vamvakaris, the father of rembetika (Greek blues) who was born in these alleys.
