A colossal 3rd-century BC theatre — the largest in Epiros — built on the site of the oldest oracle in Greece, where an earth goddess had been worshipped from around 2000 BC. By the 13th century BC, Zeus was speaking through the rustling of leaves from a sacred oak tree to worshippers. Today the restored theatre hosts Ioannina's Festival of Ancient Drama every summer, reviving a tradition unbroken since antiquity.
