Built into a vertical cliff face — the monks literally carved their monastery into the rock wall above the sea.

An extraordinary monastery embedded in a sheer vertical cliff on Amorgos' southeast coast — one of the most dramatic monastery locations in all of Greece. The white building appears to grow organically from the cliff face, suspended hundreds of metres above the sea. Reaching it requires a steep walk from the road, and the monastery's monks welcome visitors at certain hours. The views from outside the entrance are among the most vertiginous in the Aegean.
