The walls close to 3 metres wide — you walk through a crack in the White Mountains for 16km.
At 16km, supposedly the longest gorge in Europe — carved between sheer 500m walls by a river running between peaks of Avlimanakou and Volakias. Its width narrows to just 3 metres at the famous Iron Gates passage, and the gorge is home to an incredible number of wild flowers (best in April and May) and the endangered Cretan wild goat, the kri-kri. The gorge was made a national park in 1962 specifically to protect this creature.
