Once the second most important member of the Hanseatic League, UNESCO-protected Stralsund maintains its elegant medieval profile with square gables, Gothic turrets, ornate portals, and vaulted arches representing the finest Backsteingotik (red-brick Gothic) architecture in northern Germany. The Altstadt is effectively on its own island surrounded by lakes and sea.
