Six distinctive gabled brick warehouses just behind the Holstentor, once used to store salt transported from Lüneburg that was then bartered for Scandinavian furs and used to preserve the herrings that formed Lübeck's Hanseatic trade. Now among the most photographed buildings in northern Germany, their step-gabled silhouette against the Trave River is iconic.
