Inside this palace is a 1683 baroque theatre where a stage-changing machine from the 17th century still works — the oldest surviving mechanical theatre in Europe.
An enormous yet gracious early baroque palace built by Duke Ernst I in the 17th century, containing one of Europe's oldest baroque theatres, the Ekhof-Theater (1683), with its original mechanized set-changing device still in working order. The palace also houses an Egyptian collection, an art gallery, a research library of 500,000 books, and atmospheric underground passages.
