The Rennsteig follows the ancient ridge that once divided north from south Germany — a border track so old it predates any country that ever used it.
Germany's most famous long-distance trail, 168km winding southeast from Hörschel near Eisenach along forested mountain ridges to Blankensteinn on the Saale River. Marked by signposts reading 'R,' it is best hiked in May/June and September/October. Day hikes between sections offer a taste without committing to the full five-day journey.
