One of the best-preserved medieval old towns in Northern Europe, with 2.5km of intact defensive walls encircling a historic centre divided between Toompea hill (the upper town, seat of power) and the lower merchant town below. Pikk tänav (Long Street) leads north through 15th-century merchants' houses and guild buildings to the Great Coast Gate and Fat Margaret tower, while Toompea offers lookouts over a fairy-tale skyline of spires. The old town is compact enough to explore entirely on foot.
