UNESCO moved this entire temple — 45,000 blocks of stone — to save it from a rising lake. Worth every block.

Relocated stone by stone to Aglikia Island in the 1970s to save it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser, the Temple of Philae was dedicated to Isis and is one of the last great temples of ancient Egypt. The boat ride across the reservoir and the temple's dramatic waterside setting are as memorable as the Ptolemaic reliefs themselves.
