A pine forest hangs above Split's rooftops — locals walk here every morning and pretend the tourists don't exist.

Considered the lungs of Split, this hilly nature reserve at the city's western edge offers trails through fragrant pine forests, scenic lookouts and ancient chapels. The walk up via the stone staircase (Marjanske Skale) from the old Varoš neighbourhood is a mild but scenic 10-minute ascent to the Vidilica cafe at the top, with amazing city and harbour views. Different trails weave across the hill, passing small chapels including the Church of Sveti Frane.
