A UNESCO World Heritage peninsula connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus, packed with the ruins of over 40 Byzantine churches built between the 6th and 14th centuries, including the beautifully preserved Pantrokrator Church with its art gallery bell tower. The Archaeological Museum holds Thracian tombs and Roman tablets, while the narrow peninsula itself — barely wider than its medieval streets — creates an atmosphere of compressed history surrounded by sea on three sides.
