The revolution that freed Bulgaria from the Ottomans started right here on these cobblestones in 1876.
A perfectly preserved 19th-century Bulgarian revival town of 400 colourful mansion-houses where the April 1876 uprising against Ottoman rule began, with a babbling creek winding through its centre and green hills and walking trails surrounding it. The streets move at a slower pace than Bulgarian cities and the ornate timber houses with their overhanging upper floors and fenced gardens feel genuinely inhabited rather than museumified. A rare example of an entire historic townscape intact.
