A recently rediscovered Thracian and later Roman site atop a rocky bluff 20km from Kardzhali, requiring a 45-minute climb to reach dug-out water tanks, stone grooves where doors were pivoted, and what may be the Temple of Dionysus — structures up to 7,000 years old. The remote setting in the Rhodope Mountains and the site's continuing excavation give it a raw, exploratory atmosphere. The climb itself through the rocky landscape is memorable.
