A stone village climbing a cliff face, where pomegranates grow between the mosque and the fortress wall.
The stepped Ottoman-era fortress village of Počitelj is one of the most picture-perfect architectural ensembles in Bosnia and Herzegovina, cupped in a steep rocky amphitheatre with a warren of stairways climbing between ramshackle stone-roofed houses and pomegranate bushes. The 1563 Hadži Alijna Mosque has been fully restored, while the octagonal Gavrakapetan Tower in the still-ruined fortress offers views over the Neretva plain. Arriving an hour before sunset gives perfect golden light.
