An inhabited hilltop citadel overlooking one of Albania's most beautiful towns, where Ottoman whitewashed houses with a thousand windows cascade down the hillside. The castle has been continuously occupied since Illyrian times and contains Byzantine churches, a mosque, and a working community inside its ancient walls. Berat was designated a museum city by the communist government for its extraordinary Ottoman architecture.
