La Plaça del Diamant square is located in Barcelona’s Gràcia district. This square was built in 1860. “Diamond Square” got this name because of the former owner of the region, a jewelery king.

The statue of a woman waving her hands in the air on one side of the square represents the main character in Mercè Rodoreda’s 1962 novel La Plaça del Diamant, which takes its name from the square. Its name is La Colometa or Little Pigeon. The novel presents a slice of life in Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War through the character’s mouth.

Walker Insights

In Barcelona's Gràcia neighborhood, a bronze statue of a woman releasing doves stands in Plaça del Diamant — this is La Colometa, the protagonist of Mercè Rodoreda's beloved novel 'La Plaça del Diamant'. The square where fiction meets reality tells the story of ordinary people during the Spanish Civil War.
