Ukraine’s most famous painter and poet,Taras Shevchenko. It is said that he expressed his devotion to his people with the lines “I am a peasant, a poet of the common man, / but let me be a poet by my real people, / I do not want anything else…”. The name of Shevchenko, who lived between 1814 and 1861, was given to many streets and streets in Ukraine. When the Turkish poet Nâzım Hikmet, who was a great admirer, went to Ukraine in 1956, he stopped by Shevchenko’s museum to see his pen. However, the museum director brought the pen to Nazım Hikmet, who could not climb the stairs. Afterwards, Nazım Hikmet wrote the poem “Shevchenko’s Pen”.
