İzmir Clock Tower was designed by the Levantine French architect Raymond Charles Père and was built in 1901 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Abdülhamid II’s (reigned 1876–1909) accession to the throne. The tower is 25 meters long and has four fountains around the circular base and the columns inspire the North African theme. The clock is the last German Emperor II. Wilhelm’s gift. It is said that this clock has only been stopped once since the year it was founded (1901). It is said that the clock stopped in 1974 as a result of the earthquake. After the repair, the clock has been restarted.
